No Prep-Low Prep Reading Activities for Spanish Class Novels

Are you students reading a novel and you want some no prep post reading activities that are fun and engaging?! These low prep activities are perfect for any book in Spanish class!

These low prep-no prep activities are perfect for when you have between a few minutes left and class or you want to spend a full class day reviewing material!

  1. Comic Strips - Comic strips are the perfect no-prep activity for your students. All students need is a piece of paper and a writing utensil. As the teacher, you can choose to have students draw 6,8,10, or more boxes! You can also choose for them to include a sentence from the novel (or one they create) that describes the box.

  2. Comic Strip Retell - Do you want to extend your comic strip into a fun partner activity?! Pair students in groups of two. One students should describe one of the comic strip boxes while the other has to decide which one their partner is describing. Pairs should continue to switch roles and repeat!

  3. First or Second - Provide students with two events. You can prepare for this by putting them on a slideshow presentation, or decide the two events on the spot! Students have to decide which event came first or second. You can switch this up throughout by switching between which order students have to decide. Alternatively, you can gamify this. Students in small groups have to be the first to answer to get a point! A traditional approach to this activity would be to give students multiple events, and they should put them in order.

  4. Charades - Yes, high schoolers can have fun too! Students should act out a scene from the text while their group members (or another team/the rest of the class) has to state in Spanish what they are acting out. Alternatively, they can find the exact sentence from the chapter. You could choose to prepare for this by selecting the most important events you want students to understand and put them on a slideshow. Prepare the slideshow and show it to the group who is presenting. The others do not see it and they have to guess!

  5. Top 10 - What are the top 10 most important details from the text?! Have students identify them!

  6. Marker Game - Divide students into groups of two. State a true or false statement from the text. Students should be the first to grab it if it is true and should not touch it if it is false! If they grab the marker while the statement is true, they earn a point! You can choose to have students lose a point if they grab the marker when the statement is false.

  7. Two Truths and a Lie - Students can create these statements or you can! If students create them, share them with the class. The class then has to determine which statements are true and false. When the statement is false, have students change the statement to make it true.

  8. Kahoot or Blooket - These have become staples in my classroom that helps make learning feel more fun. Students can review vocabulary and details from the text through these online sites!

  9. Interpersonal Conversations - After reading a text (whether that be a novel, a chapter, or a short text) have students discuss! They can exchange opinions, state if they recommend the book or not, compare it with another, make a connection (this becomes easier when you provide the prompt, ie: if the main character has a dog, students can discuss if they have a dog or want a dog).

  10. Presentational Output - Students can write their responses! Similar to the interpersonal conversations, students can express their opinions, summarize the text, describe their favorite part, make predictions, compare and contrast it, and so on! I see many teacher do a 1-3-10 free write with students to help with output. I’ve found that this does not work best with my students, but you may want to give it a try!

And that’s it! These 10 easy to implement activities and low prep-no prep post reading activities that you can do with any Spanish class with and novel or text!

From one Spanish teacher to another, con mucho amor 🧡,
